In one of the most surprising gaming stories of 2026, Hideo Kojima’s upcoming game Physint is moving from PlayStation to Xbox.
The project was originally announced as a PlayStation game in 2024, with Sony set to publish what was described as a new action-espionage title from the creator of Metal Gear. Now, after Sony decided to step away from the project, Xbox has stepped in as the new publishing partner.
The move is particularly surprising because Kojima and Sony have worked closely together for years, including on both Death Stranding games. It also gives Xbox another major partnership with one of the most recognizable creators in the gaming industry.
Sony Decided to Walk Away From Physint
The story appears to have changed earlier this year.
According to Kojima, Kojima Productions received an unexpected notice from PlayStation Studios in mid-June saying that Sony would cancel the Physint project. The studio then spent roughly three months looking for another partner that would allow the game to continue.
Sony confirmed that it was stepping away from the project, describing it as a difficult decision while also emphasizing that its relationship with Kojima and Kojima Productions remains strong.
That last part is important. Sony isn’t describing this as a complete breakup with Kojima.
The company has worked with Kojima for around three decades, going back to his years creating the Metal Gear series for PlayStation. More recently, Sony published Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.
Still, losing Physint is a significant change.
Xbox Is Now Publishing Physint
After Sony stepped away, Kojima Productions began looking for another publisher.
The studio eventually chose Microsoft and Xbox, with Kojima saying that Xbox was a partner with whom the company shares a “common vision for the future.”
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma also welcomed the partnership, saying that creators should have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life.
The agreement goes beyond Physint, too.
Xbox and Kojima Productions are already working together on OD, the experimental horror game being developed with filmmaker Jordan Peele. Physint now becomes the second major Kojima Productions project connected to Xbox.

What Exactly Is Physint?
Physint is still a somewhat mysterious project.
Kojima originally announced the game during a PlayStation presentation in 2024, describing it as a new action-espionage game. Given Kojima’s history, that immediately led to comparisons with Metal Gear Solid.
It isn’t officially called a new Metal Gear game, and Konami still owns that franchise. Instead, Physint is expected to be a spiritual successor to the type of tactical espionage games Kojima became famous for creating.
Kojima Productions describes it as a project intended to redefine the action-espionage genre.
There is also a particularly Kojima-like ambition behind the project. The game has been described as something that could blur the line between a video game and a movie, continuing the creator’s interest in combining interactive entertainment with traditional filmmaking.
But don’t expect to play it anytime soon.
Physint is reportedly not expected to launch before 2030, and very little about its gameplay, platforms or story has been revealed so far.
This Is a Big Win for Xbox
From Microsoft’s perspective, the deal is significant.
Xbox has spent years trying to expand beyond the traditional idea of console exclusives, while also investing heavily in major creators and franchises.
Getting Kojima’s next major action game gives Xbox another recognizable name and another project that can generate attention well beyond the traditional Xbox audience.
It also makes the existing relationship around OD more important.
Instead of simply publishing one Kojima game, Xbox is now working with Kojima Productions on multiple projects. Microsoft says the relationship could even expand into film and television, although no specific projects have been announced as part of the new agreement.

What Happens to PlayStation?
This is probably the most interesting question for gamers.
Sony stepping away from Physint doesn’t necessarily mean that Kojima is permanently leaving PlayStation.
Sony says its relationship with Kojima Productions remains strong, and the company’s previous Death Stranding projects show that the two sides have a long history.
But Physint moving to Xbox is still a major shift because the project was originally presented as a PlayStation collaboration.
For PlayStation fans who were expecting Kojima’s next espionage game to continue that relationship, this is obviously a major disappointment.
For Xbox, meanwhile, it is arguably one of the biggest third-party publishing wins the company has had in years.

Final Thoughts
The biggest story here isn’t simply that Physint is coming to Xbox.
It’s that one of the most recognizable independent creators in gaming has managed to keep his most ambitious upcoming project alive after its original publisher decided to walk away.
Sony and Kojima may still have a relationship, but Xbox now has a much closer partnership with Kojima Productions than it did just a day ago.
And for gamers, the most intriguing part may be what comes next.
Kojima has already promised that Physint will continue and described Xbox as a partner that shares his vision for the future. If the game really is intended as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear, Xbox may have just picked up one of the most interesting projects of the next generation.
The only problem is that we’ll probably have to wait until 2030 or later to find out exactly what Kojima has been building.
